Sports trading happens on a betting exchange, like Betfair, not a normal bookmaker. On an exchange, odds move up and down in real time, before and during a match, the same way a share price moves on a stock exchange.
Instead of picking a winner and waiting for the final whistle, you can back an outcome, then later lay it off (bet against it) at a different price. If the price has moved in your favour, you lock in a profit there and then, regardless of what happens for the rest of the match.
Before kick-off, you back Team A to win at odds of 3.00.
Team A scores an early goal. Their odds shorten to 2.00 as the market reacts.
You lay Team A at 2.00, the opposite bet, at the new price.
You've locked in a profit. It doesn't matter what the final score is, this trade is already settled.
This is what "trading" means throughout this page: reading how prices move during a match, and knowing when to enter and exit. Everything else on this page assumes you understand this first.
